Hey guys! You all did a very great job. I did some paint overs to show you what I may have done to simplify things and make them read a bit easier from afar.
I am trying to make things read with 3 values (Minus the apple one, I just wanted to add a highlight haha!). Below I will type a reason why I did what I did.
For this piece, it was not reading from a small thumbnail, so I broke it down and tried to make the light and dark side of the apple read easily with just using 3 (+ white) graphic shapes. As you can see, the medium value helps push the light value really bright and it also helps hold everything together. If you squint your eyes, you can easily see that the light value is very similar to the floor while the background wall value is the medium values. The darkest dark will only be the shadow and cast shadow area of the apple. Once you are able to simplify things to it's basic graphic read, rendering it will be a walk in the park!
For this image, I used the darks to frame the medium and light value. In addition, I tried to contrast organic shapes (round shapes) against the man-made shapes (straight lines and angles) I feel like it helps bring a even better focus. Your thumbnail originally read really great, so it's just about breaking things down a bit more to add some interest :). I also used the curves of the bushes and the tilt of the bridge to direct your eyes to the boat.
Maybe the photo was taken in strange lighting but I found it hard to read. So for this image, I tried a different approach and made it complex small shapes vs big graphic shapes. I feel like now with this simple set up, it is pretty easy to read. You can then use supporting elements to help point toward the image and frame it (top of the buildings and then the poles). Hope this makes sense!
See ya guys tomorrow! If you want a draw over, please do not forget to post your work here! I am short on time during the week, but I will try my best to get to them.
