Here is the 2nd batch of paint overs :)
For this one, I tried to simplify the shapes a lot. I know there are a lot of little shiny leaves all over the place, but sometimes that breaks our value design. I used the shadows to lead our eye in and then had the darks of the shadow frame this image to bring you into the image with the bush on the right. I also used different temperatures of the greens to differentiate the type of bush/grass/surface.
I usually crop these paintings so you can see what I did with one side and compare and contrast :)
Simplified the back a lot more. and had the bush reach all the way to the top to frame the lamp. I made the bushes more jagged in shape to help the lamps stand out. Also used different hues to describe the form :)
For this image, I just pushed all the darks darker so we can make the umbrella feel illuminated :). Using different shadow colors we can also help make the different materials on the effected areas feel like they are in shadow (Hope that makes sense). Remember to use everything from the shadows to the holes in the tree to help lead your eye back into the image.
I made the area surrounding the sign darker and made the sign lighter so you can immediately see this from afar! Also used a different hues to show different materials :)

Cool, thanks so much for the tips! I really like the jagged-shaped trees to contrast with the lamppost. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I love seeing the simplification into clear shapes and values. I tend to get very caught up in the details! :-O
ReplyDeleteWOW! I love the simplicity of these -- something to really strive for.
